Nancy Hollister
|
We send our heartiest congratulations to Marietta native Nancy Putnam Hollister. At 11:30am, on December 31, 1998, she became the 66th Governor of Ohio and made history by being the first female to hold the office.
A former councilman in Marietta, she also became the first female mayor of Marietta and also was Ohio's first female Lt. Governor. "Firsts" seem to run in her family. She is a descendent of General Rufus Putnam, one of the original 48 settlers who arrived in 1788 to establish Marietta, the first organized settlement in the Northwest Territory.
Nancy Hollister completed the term of Governor George Voinovich, who resigned to take his place in the U.S. Senate. Her term ended January 11, 1999 with the swearing in of Bob Taft as Ohio's 67th Governor. While her term in office may have been short, her legacy in Ohio history will remain forever.
Following her stay as Governor, she moved into a vacant state representative position.
Nancy Hollister is married to Jeff Hollister and resides in Marietta and they have 5 children.
